Euro 2008: Group A - (07/06/2008)Portugal 2-0 Turkey

A pair of beautiful goals from Pepe and Raul Meireles saw Scolari's side ease past a resistant Turkey.

In the first few minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo fired a short high over the bar. Just after quarter of an hour, Ricardo Carvalho took a beautiful freekick, and Pepe just headed it in. The Portuguese players celebrated, only to be disgusted when it was called an offside. Just before halftime, Cristiano Ronaldo smacked a superb freekick, which completely beat the goalkeeper, and hit the right pole.

Midway during the second half, a Portugal player was fouled just outside the box, and Nuno Gomes slapped a shot onto the woodwork. Ronaldo then ripped through the defence on the left side and curled a shot to the bottom right, drawing a save from the Turkish goalkeeper Volkan. Portugal broke the deadlock in style in the 70th minute when Pepe elegantly exchanged passes with Gomes, and then dinked the ball past Volkan, via a slight deflection from Emre Asik, who tried to bring him down. A few minutes later, Cristiano Ronaldo crossed the ball to Nuno Gomes, whose header deflected off the crossbar. Another goal for Portugal in injury time, when Ronaldo neatly passed the ball to Moutinho, who lost control of the ball for a second and then set up a brilliant finish for Raul Meireles.
